As I recall from childhood (and the other evening!!), the cho-chos
were poured into a bathroom sized dixie cup, TINY by any ice
cream lover's standard; a flat popsicle stick inserted and covered
with a flat round paper cover, pierced by the stick to cover the ice
cream and act as a drip shield for the hand(AS IF!!). In Reading, PA
they were made or at least sold by Clover Farms Dairy, but they
discontinued them in the 70s or early 80s. As I recall from the other
night, it was/is a light chocolate malt as creamy as butter, one rolls
the delicate paper cup tween the palms to free the creamy malt
goodness from its paper prison and then the tongue laps furiously to
avoid dripping it all over the lap or steering wheel. I noted the
delicacy was no longer manufactured by local dairy, but a woman
who brought them back to the market for local "boomers" to revisit
the artery clogging (no doubt cuz it couldnt be this creamy
otherwise--and who cares, really?) joys of their youth. No
ingredients were listed on the single serve portions, but I will check
to see on the mass quantity pack. Not sure how it gets so creamy
since malt tends to grainy up ice cream--- think dusty road sundae!

I found this....hope its what you are looking for!

according to lots of people, this is the recipe that comes closest to the original Cho Cho.

Cho Cho
(Recipe by Rich Creator)

1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream
3 tablespoons Carnation Chocolate Malted Milk powder
1 tablespoon Carnation Original Malted Milk powder

With a mixer, mix on high speed until creamy.
Pour into plastic drinking cups, insert a Popsicle stick, freeze.
(Note: Some recommend using 4 tablespoons of the chocolate malted milk powder instead of 3.)

You can still find "original" cho cho's at Schell's Dairy Swirl, located at 4625 5th Street Hwy, Temple, PA, phone number:  610-939-9676.  They may be willing to tell you what's in them and then you can experiment with the recipe until you have a flavor the meets your taste; or they may be willing to part with their recipe.  In any event, good luck.

Hi, I lived in St. Louis, Mo. and bought Cho-Cho's at a little Italian
market near my house on Warren St. Now it is the historically renewed
"old French Quarter" but back then it was mainly Italian people in the
area. The streets were cobblestone and the sidewalks were brick laid in
a herringbone design. The Italian street venders would come by every
evening with shave ice & Cinnamon Candy Apples.
The Cho-Cho's I had were on a stick in sort of a paper cup. Slightly
narrower at the top of the ice cream. They were chocolate malt flavor
and did not have any candy or hard dip chocolate on them. They were
wonderful.
This was about 1951 or 52.

I never heard of Cho cho's until I moved to Pennyslvania
with my husband.  He grew up on them and they are
delicious.  They sell them at the local ice cream store
near Reading, PA.  I don't like chocolate ice cream so I
was apprehensive about trying one but they are far from
chocolate ice cream.  They come in a cup with a stick in
the middle and you have to warm them up in your hand to
get the cover off.  It's interesting to read some of the
stories on here.

This thread was started almost 10 years ago...and still alive and kicking, My goodness! As I read the first post by Diana, I can't help but wanting to also know the recipe for Cho Cho ice cream. So does the recipe still exist? I hope someone could point me to the post# for the recipe...if it exists.
