  Hi,

Does anyone know where you can get Greek style yogurt?

I have seen it in several recipes, most recently in a recipe for a Banana Torte. It calls for this type of yogurt. I have been having troble finding it here in Northern California, although some stores in San Francisco have it, but that is 50 miles away, and I would go there and buy some, but Yogurt doesn't freeze well at all.

Maybe, on the Internet, there may be a place to buy it. I don't know. I do know it is made of "Sheeps Milk", and that the consistency is very thick, and the texture is more like whipped cream, very smooth.

Well, if anyone can help, i'd appreciate it.

Thank you,  Diana

Greek style yogurt may not be the easily ingredient
to buy in some region, what I usually do is to invest
on  a couple yogurt strainer, or  you can place a
stainless steel strainer, lined with double layers
of cheesecloth; place 2 cups of natural yogurt(not the
economical type set with gelatin) allow to drain in
refrigerator for 6-8 hours. You will be able to get
1 1/4 cup of yogurt cheese with low acidity, use
within 2 weeks. Great for dipping too.
Happy baking,

Buon Appetito

For anyone who would like to know about the Greek Style Yogurt, I have found it. I spoke to the person who runs the dairy department at my local supermarket, and he was able to "special order" it for me. It is called "Total", and is made by a company in Greece called OARE. Just thought maybe some of you, like myself would be interested. It comes in Sheeps's Milk, Regular plain yogurt, low-fat yogurt, Honey flavored, etc.

Happy Baking!

  Hi Diana,
I saw your posting about Greek Yogurt and was pleased to hear that you local supermarket would order Total for you.  I have spent much time in Greece and love this yogurt...which grocery store said they would order it for you?  Was it one of the larger ones?  If so perhaps my local store in S. CA. would also order it for me!
Fingers crossed!
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks
Suzanne

  Hi Suzanne,

No, it wasn't one of the major supermarkets like Safeway, or one of the other big ones. It was Oliver's Market in Cotati, California where I live in Northern California. It's a large supermarket, but not a chain. I would just talk to whoever is the head of the dairy department at your supermarket, and ask them to find out if they can get it for you. Actually, they are carrying almost the full line of Total at my market now, and if it sells well, then they'll have it all the time. Please let me know if you can get it.

Good Luck, Diana, Diana's Desserts

  hi,
i was wondering, after reading the other posts, if anyone could direct me to a store in san francisco where i can find this truly amazing yogurt. total or any other greek style yogurt to be exact.

  Hi Vega,

Yes, I do happen to know where you can get Total Greek Style Yogurt in San Francisco.

You can get it for sure at Andronico's Market on Irving Street, in the Sunset District. And also, they have it most of the time at Tower Market on Portola Blvd. near the Twin Peaks area of San Francisco.

I know this as I am originally from San Francisco, and when I was doing my search for this wonderful creamy yogurt, I had called several markets in San Francisco, and found that these two markets carry it.

Good Luck and Happy Baking and Cooking!!

Hi, I would really like to know why such a basic ingedient as greek yogurt is impossible to buy here in the USA, I am British and have lived in the USA for 4 years and have been trying to get hold of some Greek yogurt since I moved here and no one knows what it is, the supermarkets are hopeless and my local gourmet shop can't get it, It's great in cooking as it keeps its body even when added to hot things as in Curries etc and great for breakfast with honey and nuts.Total also makes greek yogurt in different flavours and they are also delicous

  Hi Anne,

I know what you mean. It does seem so difficult to get Greek Style Yogurt here in the USA.

Do you have Trader Joe's stores in your area? They have just started carrying Total Yogurt. I received an email recently from the distributors of Total Greek Yogurt, and they wanted to let me know that Trader Joe's is carrying it now.

I am assuming that all of the Trader Joe's stores are carrying the yogurt.

Please let me know if you find it, either at Trader Joe's or somewhere else.

I am lucky, my neighborhood supermarket started special ordering it for me last year, and now they always have it in stock.

Good Luck,
Diana

  Hi,

A guest to Diana's Desserts website has emailed me about where you can find Total Greek Yogurt in New York City.

Here is what she says:

"I was reading that people were trying to find out where to get this wonderful Total Greek Yogurt.  Well, I just found out about it the first time this past weekend when I purchased it at Balducci's on 155 west 66th street in NYC (near Broadway).  It is so totally delicious and came with a little strawberry dip.  I called the store and they said it comes from a a place called FAGE DAIRY in Greece!  So I suppose it has to be special ordered.

Hope this helps, Carole".

Hope this information helps all of you New Yorker's out that are looking for the Total Greek Yogurt.....Diana

Note from Diana:
I have also found a Greek store online that sells it too, but you have to call them. They are in New Jersey. The name of the store is The Greek Store, and their web address is: http://www.eatgreek.com/docs/other.html. Their phone number is: 908-272-2550.

Sincerely, Diana
