1/2 cup solid shortening, such as Crisco
1 cup brown sugar, packed
3 cups (plain) all-purpose flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cloves
dash of ground cinnamon
dash of ground nutmeg
3 tsp. milk
1/2 cup orange juice
5 cups chopped nuts
1 cup chopped candied cherries
1 cup chopped candied pineapple
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped dates
Prehat oven to 300 degrees F (150 C). Grease cookie sheets.
Cream together the shortening and brown sugar; add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Beat thoroughly.
Sift together the flour, baking soda, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add alternately to first mixture with milk and orange juice. After mixing thoroughly, add the nuts and fruits. Drop by rounded teaspoons onto a greased cookie sheet and bake at 300 degrees F (150 C) for about 12 minutes.
