Original Recipe for Doughnuts

Servings: 15-20 doughnuts

This is the Original Doughnut Recipe by the Salvation Army Lassies of World War I.


Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
11/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. unsalted butter
4 tsp. baking powder
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup milk
1 egg

Topping: (optional)
Granulated sugar
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
Confectioners' sugar


Instructions:
Put flour in shallow pan, add salt, baking powder, and sugar. Rub in butter with fingertips. Add the well beaten egg and milk and stir thoroughly. Place on floured board, roll to 1/4 to 1/2 inch in thickness, shape, fry, and drain on paper towels. If desired, mix granulated sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg together. Sprinkle mixture heavily over doughnuts or just sprinkle confectioners' sugar over doughnuts.

Makes: 15-20 doughnuts.
