Ingredients:
1 cup butter or shortening (I use half of each)
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 oz. red food coloring
1 tsp. cocoa
1 tsp. salt
2 1/4 cups cake flour
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup buttermilk
1 tbsp. white vinegar
1 tsp. baking soda
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 C).
Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste of the food coloring and cocoa. Add to the sugar mixture. Add salt, flour, buttermilk and vanilla. Stir in white vinegar and baking soda; do not beat. Pour into three 8 or 9-inch cake pans and bake at 350 degrees (180 C) for 30-35 minutes. Cool and frost.
Frost with a cream cheese frosting or your favorite.
Makes 10-12 servings.
