Fresh Fruit Shortcakes

What a simple and quick dessert to serve at your next brunch. If desired, substitute the strawberries with fresh sliced peaches or nectarines, or other fresh berries such as blackberries or boysenberries.
1 store bought angel food or pound cake
6 cups sliced strawberries* (see note below)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup hot water
1 carton (8-ounce) frozen non-dairy whipped topping, thawed
1. Cut cake into 10 pieces.
2. For strawberry topping, mix together strawberries, sugar and hot water.
3. Serve strawberry topping over cake and garnish with whipped topping.
*Note: Strawberries may be substituted with other fresh fruit, or a combination of different types of berries if desired.
Makes 12 servings.
