This enduring American favorite proves that a recipe doesn't need to be complicated to be delicious. The secret to the perfect float? Icy-cold root beer and thoroughly frosted glasses.

Vanilla Ice Cream
Root Beer (chilled)
Chocolate syrup (optional)

For Garnish: (optional)
Whipped Cream or Non-dairy frozen whipped topping (thawed)

You will need:
Tall ice cream soda glasses, or glass mugs

Place tall ice cream soda glasses or glass mugs in freezer to get the glasses or mugs "Icy-Cold", for about 15 minutes, before making the root beer floats.

Place one scoop of vanilla ice cream in a tall ice cream soda glass or glass mug, pour root beer over ice cream to cover, add another scoop of vanilla ice cream. Pour about 1/4 cup of chocolate syrup over the ice cream (optional). Pour enough root beer over ice cream to "almost the top" of glass or mug (root beer is very foamy, so you don't want to pour it to the very top of glass, or it might spill over.) If desired, top with whipped cream or thawed non-dairy whipped topping. Place a long handled spoon (such as an ice-tea spoon) and a beverage straw in glass or mug. Serve immediately.

1). Coca Cola (Coke) may be substituted for Root Beer, if desired.
2). Any ice cream flavor may be substituted for the vanilla ice cream, but vanilla ice cream is the traditional flavor used in making a root beer float.
