Servings: Makes one 9-inch pie

Comments:
Here is another of my Grandma's recipes. This is a really good pie that our family has enjoyed for a long time, especially at this time of year.

Ingredients:
2 cups chopped cooking apples
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 egg yolk, beaten
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. lemon juice
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 egg white, beaten until foamy
1 9-inch unbaked pie shell

Instructions:
Put chopped apples in a large bowl. Add sugars, flour, egg yolk, vanilla, lemon juice and pecans; mix well. Fold in beaten egg white. Stir well and pour into pie shell. Bake at 350 degrees F (180 C) for 30 to 45 minutes or until apples are tender and brown.

If desired, serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a spoonful of whipped cream.

Makes one 9-inch pie.

I really like this recipe, however I want to ask, what can we add instead of Pecans and what to do if we don't have cooking apples (they aren't sold here)? Can regular apples be used?

Hi Zeph,

You can leave the pecans out or use another type of nut, such as chopped walnuts or whatever type of nuts you like. You may want to experiment with different types of nuts, but I do think chopped walnuts would be a good substitute for the pecans. As far as a substitute for cooking apples, any type of apples that would be good for baking can be used. Make sure the type of apples you use are not too sweet or too soft. Use a crisp type apple such as Golden Delicious, Granny Smith or Fuji, etc. Good luck and enjoy!.....Diana, Diana's Desserts
